Stitching Cynicism with Hope/ Yarnbombs from 2020
While optimism is my natural state, I readily admit I see the world through a cynical lens. The pandemic served as a stark reminder that "everything's going to be alright" isn't always a comforting truth. Many lost loved ones, livelihoods, and a sense of normalcy.
My work isn't about pretending things are okay. It's about acknowledging the struggle and offering a different kind of comfort.
That's where the yarnbombs come in. In 2020 phrases like "take care" and "keep going" became my way of expressing empathy and quiet solidarity. They're a silent message to the community: you're not alone. We're in this together, even if things are far from perfect.
My background in theatre and working with children fuels my artistic vision. Both involve creating worlds of possibility and imagination, a place where escape and wonder exist. I capture this spirit by transforming yarn into whimsical animal forms. These playful creatures serve as a reminder that even amidst cynicism, there's room for a touch of childlike joy.
Art isn't a policy change or a grand fix-all, but it can be a refuge. My yarn bombs offer a respite from suffering, a moment to connect with something positive and hopeful. They're a vibrant testament to our collective will to "keep going." We may not be able to fix everything, but we can strive for change, offer support, and find solace in artistic creation.
These yarn bombs are a symbol of the human spirit's resilience, a reminder that even amidst cynicism, hope, and a desire for connection can persist.
